Mission San Antonio de Padua

Mission San Antonio de Padua

Quilt Design and images Copyright by Susan Plack 1999

Mission San Antonio De Padua was the third mission to be founded. A bronze bell was hung from a tree and Father Serra rang the bell shouting for the “gentiles” to come and receive the faith. When reminded that there were not gentiles around the father replied that he hoped the bell would be heard around the world.

There is evidence of an elaborate water system at the missions that the early residents used to bring in water from the San Antonio River. Because the mission was so remote it fell to complete ruin in the years after it was abandoned. The Hearst Foundation funds helped to rebuild the mission in 1948.
