Mission San Buenaventura

Mission San Buenaventura

Quilt design and images copyright by Susan Plack, 1998

Mission San Buenaventura was founded on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1782. It was the last mission founded personally by Father Serra. The new missions were to be a church only - no industries, no Indian labor. Father Serra ignored the new mandates and built San Buenaventura into a thriving operation. By 1845 all of the lands had been confiscated from the mission. It was not until 1887 and the arrival of the railroad that the city surrounding the mission prospered.
