Mission La Purisima Concepcion

Mission La Purisima Concepcion

Quilt design and images copyright by Susan Plack, 1999

Mission La Purisima Concepcion was founded on December 8, 1787, by Father Lasuen. La Purisima was one of the largest and most successful of the missions. Earthquakes and floods destroyed many of the earliest buildings. After the quake in 1824, the fathers and Indians rebuilt more earthquake resistant buildings.

In 1951 the mission was rebuilt using original tools and methods. La Purisima has become a State Historic Park of over 960 acres. It is the most restored of the missions. It is also the most complete historic restoration in the West. Park rangers recreate mission life for its visitors.
