Mission San Fernando Rey de Espania

Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana

Quilt design and images copyright by Susan Plack, 1998

Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana was founded September 8, 1797. The best spot for the mission was already claimed by Francisco Reyes the mayor of the Los Angeles pueblo. He gave up his claim and became the godfather of the first child baptized at the mission. The mission was the fourth founded in three months as Father Lausen tried to close the gaps in El Camino Real. The church was competed only two months after the dedication. The mission soon became quite productive supplying goods for Los Angeles. The mission continually added on as more and more settlers came to Los Angeles. As more settlers came, more Indians left, until there were not enough laborers to sustain the mission.
