Mission Santa Barbara

Mission Santa Barbara

Quilt design and images copyright by Susan Plack, 1998

Father Lasuen founded Mission Santa Barbara on December 4, 1786. Father Serra’s dream was to have three Channel missions protected by a presidio between San Luis Obispo and San Gabriel. Three churches were built before the 1812 earthquake. The great stone church we see today was dedicated in 1820. Santa Barbara is the only mission with two similar towers. Santa Barbara was saved from secularization. As Pio Pico was approaching to take over the mission, California was declaired a state.
