East Brother Lighthouse

East Brother Lighthouse

Quilt Designed and Copyright by Susan Plack 1996

The East Brother Lighthouse is located on East Brother Island in the San Francisco Bay area. It was first lit on the evening of March 1, 1874. The Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the nation's lighthouses in 1939, and took over East Brother at that time. The lighthouse was then set to be demolished, rebuilt, and automated in 1960's, but was finally declared a historical site in 1971 which saved the original house. It is now a bed and breakfast.

The original photo of East Brother was taken at sunset and the house appeared to have a purple cast. Thus my opportunity for a purple lighthouse.
