Point Pinos Lighthouse

Point Pinos Lighthouse

Quilt Designed and Copyright by Susan Plack 1997

Point Pinos was put into service on February 1, 1855, and is the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the west coast. The lighthouse is located at the southern point of Monterey Bay, and was named Punta de los Piños, or Point of the Pines. The Peninsula is covered with Monterey Pines. On April 18, 1906, a violent earthquake shook the lighthouse tower causing extensive damage. It took two days for the news of the destruction in San Francisco caused by the earthquake to reach the lighthouse at Point Pinos. The lighthouse is now run by the Coast Guard.
