Saint George Reef Lighthouse

Saint George Reef Lighthouse

Quilt Designed and Copyright by Susan Plack 1997

Saint George Reef is located about eight miles north of Crescent City, and about six miles out to sea. In 1883 work began to blast the top off of an outcrop of rocks in order to build a lighthouse on the reef. Because of it's location, the lighthouse was not completed and lit until October 20, 1892. St. George was not a popular posting for most light keepers, due to it's isolated location. Several keepers were killed while posted at the house. During one storm in 1952, a 145 foot wave crashed over the top of the lighthouse, sending water running down the spiral staircase. The lighthouse was shut down in 1975. In 1993 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
